Writing for Story: Craft Secrets of Dramatic Nonfiction

As discussed in this YouTube video - we will rank and review Writing for Story as to offer you insight and value without reading the book yet!

First, we will rank the book based on three factors:

  1. Enjoyability

  2. Applicability

  3. Literary Value

Score:

Enjoyability (3*)

The two-time Pulitzer winning author begins the book with the two short stories that earned him critical acclaim. You don’t quite know it at first, but these stories will hook you and drag you along for a literary adventure.

Jon Franklin proceeds to spend the remainder of the book discussing variations of structure, style, and strategy for effective writing.

The second half of the book slows down and becomes more information-focused. The same storytelling persists, but now you want to take notes.

Applicability (5*)

If this book isn’t the epitome of applicability, I’m not sure what is…

Great for all readers, writers, and craftsmen!

Literary Value (5*)

I love that Jon Franklin is not the “telling” type. Even when he breaks down literary definitions, he never abandons his simple storytelling principles that proceed to hook our attention.

It’s like that fun teacher who makes you want to learn!

Top Three Lessons:

  1. Structure is King

  2. Write Your Ending First

  3. Create Your Character through Behavior
