Well, hello there.

Do you celebrate Independence Day?

I do.

I take it you already smell the barbeque. Poolside. Bright lights, and people.

Maybe there’s a wet dog dashing and drooling. Maybe you’re starting to get the sloshes.

But, I’m sure you’ve never seen a DiPaolo Independence Day.

Well, more like…a Louis DiPaolo Indepdence Day. That is, Louis DiPaolo Sr.

Yes, my father believes in independence. Only, his idea of independence involves a dance.

A belly dance of sorts. Mixed in with the appreciation of life that one only acquires through impulse.

It starts the same. Always does, every time.

Father cues Dusty Springfield’s “Son of a Preacher Man”, and motions me to join.

I tell him no, but that sure as sand won’t wipe the smile from his face.

He flushes his hair back, like a dolphin lift to the sun, and sparkles.

Louis J. DiPaolo Jr.
